Best Sydney Beaches

Sydney beaches in summer are at their prime, with hot sun, white sand, refreshing water and a wealth of activities. Spending time on at least one, if not several, of the stunning beaches is an absolute must-do when visiting Sydney in the summer.

To get a broad survey of the city’s coastline, one of the best things to start with is the Bondi to Coogee Beach Coastal Walk. Following an oceanside pathway, the walk offers panoramic views and turnoff points to some of the best beaches in town. Along the 90-minute stroll, watch surfers and dolphins take to the waves. Then, make sure to take time out on the sand. If you want to settle in for the day, here are some of the best patches of sand around town.

In the Eastern Suburbs, Bondi Beach is one of the most popular hotspots in town. The cove offers great swimming conditions throughout the year, as long as you stay between the yellow and red flags. While the waves lapping against the sand may seem docile and alluring, Bondi is also known for its rip tides, but if you practice smart swimming it is not a problem. Beyond the beach, Bondi also offers a fantastic array of cafes with excellent coffee and bars with a happening scene night and day.

Not far from Bondi, Tamarama Beach offers a more relaxed vibe. This small, narrow beach oasis is less populated by the tourists that flock to other more popular places. It’s a great place for surfing due to large swells that glide in from surrounding rock formations, swimming though can be hit or miss because of the strong current. On some days, it simply isn’t permitted, but that depends on the tide. The beach is easily accessible via the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk.

Farther astray from Bondi, Bronte Beach offers a much more family-centered, locals vibe. Many Aussies come here to barbecue on beachside grills that populate the adjacent park. Bronte Beach has a designated “ocean pool” built right into a section of ocean cliff rocks, and it offers a safe place to take a plunge and swim a few laps amid the lapping waves.

Going beyond Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, one of the best beaches in town to visit is Manly. Accessed by a charming 30-minute ferry ride across Sydney Harbour, or a short drive, Manly is a lively beach district to visit. Start the day with a stroll or bike ride along the pedestrian boulevard Corso where you can pop in and out of a great variety of shops. Those who stop in at lunch surely will be tempted to indulge in Australian fish and chips. With tranquil waters, Manly is a great place to learn to surf and even go snorkeling. If you want to make the most of Manly, take a morning tour and follow it up with a lunch cruise.

Slightly off the beaten track yet only 15 minutes outside of central Sydney, Balmoral Beach is a less common tourist place, which makes it the ideal patch of sand to kick back and relax. Plus it’s surrounded by parklands and walking tracks and it offers such activities as kayaking and standup paddle boarding, because the waters are fairly placid. Even though this beach remains vacant on the weekends, it really heats up on the weekends, so prepare to share the experience with others.
